NIGERIAN WEDDING IN TORONTO | A MODERN CULTURAL FUSION

Uduak & Ife paid homage to their cultural roots throughout their cultural fusion Nigerian wedding. Being Canadian-Nigerian, celebrating their different tribes was a very important element for them in putting together their wedding. Uduak’s native tribe, Akwa Ibom, originates from the eastern part of Nigeria, while Ife’s native tribe, Yoruba, originates from the western part of Nigeria.

Uduak & Ife were determined to keep their original wedding date despite the challenges faced due to the Covid-19 pandemic. They streamlined their guest list from 150 guests to 50 physical attendees and over 100 online viewers.

Despite the smaller scale, Uduak and Ife had all the elements they envisioned for their Nigerian wedding. From the ‘getting ready phase’ surrounded by their best friends, to the first look at the park, to their Ceremony and Reception; their unique visions were brought to life. The wedding took place in Toronto Ontario, Canada.

Uduak & Ife ensured that although their wedding was smaller, it had all the elements of their dream wedding day. The color theme was Green, White & Gold.

Green represents Nature, fruitfulness and is the symbolic color of Nigeria.

The couple got to celebrate both cultural fusions in the 2 different outfits, the diverse menu, and music. One of the highlights of the wedding, according to the bride, was being able to dress up in her native regalia and dance with her parents who made it in time to the wedding despite the restrictions of travel and their 2-week quarantine.

Uduak said, “The way I felt in my second outfit (The traditional Akwa Ibom dress with the staff which is symbolic to the first daughter) and getting to interact with our online attendees during the wedding reception was special. The overall ambiance, food, music – everything was so memorable.”

The wedding planner, Adeola of Celebration Events, ensured that all government regulations and safety precautions were met.
Planning the wedding during the pandemic had its fair share of challenges, but everything turned out beautifully. This couple had their modern Nigerian-Canadian wedding and a memorable experience surrounded by their closest friends and family.
