There has been this new wave lately of DIY (do it yourself) movement. There are hundreds and hundreds of YouTube videos tutorials on how to do just about anything under the sun. Social media is flooded with influencers that are DIYing all sorts of things encouraging us to join the club and take on the challenge.
As much as DIYs are fun and can turn out successful, when it comes to your wedding it is just not a risk any bride should take. Yes, we know, weddings are expensive. These days by the time you are done paying everyone that needs to be paid you have spent the total of a down payment for your first home.
It makes sense that in trying to try to save some coins, you would decide to take on the challenge of DIYing certain aspect of your wedding. Now, I am not saying that DIYs are wrong, but what I am saying is that there are certain things that you just can not risk to Do -it-yourself because it might turn into a disaster. To give you some guidance on what you should not DIY;
I have put together a few items that I believe wholeheartedly that you should not do yourself.
1. Hair and Makeup
I have a friend that is a hairdresser and makeup artist so I’ve had the chance to see the outcome of her doing her own hair and makeup for her own wedding. Now, I tried to highly discourage her from doing it but of course she gave me her ten reasons as to why she believed it would be a good idea and one of those reasons was of course that it would save her money.
Well, let me tell you that on her wedding day she redid her hairstyle twice and was not happy with her makeup because she was so stressed out. It turned out in the end that she realized she could have saved six hours had she hired a hairdresser and make up artist. The last thing you want as a bride is to be stressed out about your hair and makeup.
2. Catering
To be honest it is never a good idea to DIY your catering for your wedding. Family making food for you can come at a cheaper cost but at the same time you do not want to be running into some serious issues on the day of the wedding. The food either will be late, or cold if it’s supposed to be warm.
DIYing your catering could also mean that you may run out of food because your family does not really know the amount of food they should be cooking for. Now there are other options that you can use if you are looking to save money on catering that does not involve family and friends. Connect with Adeola lead planner of Celebration Events Mgmt. to discuss your options.
3. Photography and videography
So we all know a friend, a cousin or an uncle that takes great pictures either on their Iphone or camera because these days everyone has a camera. Though it may sound like a great idea, the outcome is guaranteed to not be so great.
A few months down the line when you look back at those pictures and videos you will realise that you do not love them and then you will begin to regret not hiring a professional to do it.
4. Wedding cake
Your wedding cake is just not something that you want to be doing or that you want your aunt to be doing for you unless your aunt is a professional wedding cake baker.
You don’t want to walk into the reception hall the day of your wedding and look over to your cake and be so disappointed because it did not turn out the way you hoped it would especially if the taste is not palatable, the colors do not align with your overall theme or the cake does not photograph well.
5. Day of coordination
It is definitely possible to plan your own wedding especially if you happen to be a planner yourself or a very organized person however I would advise against doing your own day of coordination or even having family or friends do your day of coordination.
Believe or not, your family and friends are invested in your wedding and they will want to be in the moment and throw their shoes away and jump on the dance floor when their favorite song comes on. If you do your own day of coordination you will actually miss out on your own wedding day.
You don’t want to look back at your special day and realise that you did not enjoy it because you were busy coordinating.
At the end of the day cutting costs is a good thing and you should definitely look at ensuring that you stay within your budget but still being able to have the wedding of your dreams.
